Get Ready for the Fourth: A Bake Date Recap

Tomorrow is the Fourth of July and this week we had a wonderful evening baking red, white, and blue cupcakes. These were so easy and fun to make and were absolutely delicious. I recommend trying this with your kids. We have included the ingredients and steps for you to follow along with a thematic background:

We selected this recipe for a variety of reasons. Besides knowing that this a delicious recipe, we wanted an easy recipe that used egg whites to help maintain a white base for coloring. Aside from the cake flour, we wanted a recipe that called for what most people have on hand. All purpose flour can be substituted for cake flour, but it is a stronger flour and I prefer to bake with all purpose when making richer cakes or when using ingredients like buttermilk or sour cream. With the addition of color which can lead to more mixing of the batter, cake flour is better.

Leading up to the event we shared a free cupcake decorating printable and a Sci Show Kids video about the science of cake baking. Both are great tools to accompany this acitivity. Let us know in the comments if you have any questions of if you would like us to share any other resources.

Please send us photos if you make this beautiful yummy dessert or any other Independence Day desserts to contactus.bakingwithkids@gmail.com or post on our Facebook post.

Thank you to Heather of the Toasty Kitchen for sharing the perfect recipe for this activity.
