Cake Baking is Scientific

Baking is very scientific. Understanding the science in baking can be another benefit of baking with our kids. The ingredients we use can play a big role in how our final dessert comes out. Each ingredient has a job; sometimes they have more than one job.

Sci Show Kids has put together a great video that briefly explores some of the science in baking a cake. It’s an excellent introduction into the discussion and hands on baking can help create a real understanding.

On Wednesday, you can join us in baking cupcakes. It’s a virtual playdate, but we can also chat about the science in baking and the purpose for the ingredients that we are using.

Now, take a look at some of the ingredients we will be using:

White Cupcakes

  • 1 ½ cups cake flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter room temperature
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 3 large egg whites room temperature
  • ½ cup milk room temperature

Are you ready for a little baking science?
